The man behind Rooster Carpentry is Brett Helfrich, that’s me.  I was born in Vancouver and raised in Deep Cove where I still live today and am raising my own family.  I come from an extensive line of tradesmen including both grandfathers, father, uncles, cousins and my sister is a goldsmith.

After graduating from Seycove I wasted no time and got a job in residential carpentry with a company that offered apprenticeships. That’s where I met Kevin, an ex Royal Navy man turned carpenter. Kevin spent the next three years teaching me, not only carpentry but about team work and work ethic, “The Navy way”. Kevin loaded me with knowledge and confidence and encouraged me to go frame houses. I joined a forming/framing crew where I finished up my apprenticeship.

In 2007 I was privileged to be hired by Jim West of Westworks Construction.  For nine years I worked as a foreman running jobs of all sizes. Jim always made sure I had a young apprentice allowing me time to teach them.  Jim taught me about the artistic side of the trade, design, history and origin of anything building related.  When I left Westworks to start Rooster Carpentry, Jim offered me advice, support and encouragement.

When starting Rooster Carpentry, the main goal was to give people the top construction   experience possible. During a large project we can be in our client’s personal space for weeks at a time.  We know the importance of minimizing the disruption and keeping the site clean in order to lessen the impact on our clients’ day to day lives.  Our business model is very transparent so that our clients can see where their hard earned money is going.

As a young man, I wanted to be off the tools by 35 years old and just manage projects. Now anyone that knows me knows I want to be on the tools forever. Training young carpenters, keeping the site running efficiently and getting my hands dirty. So don’t be surprised to see me on your project ripping tile out or doing some high end finishing. Upon meeting me, you will understand very fast that I am dedicated and very passionate about my craft.
